Viking Burner Clicks But Will Not Light: What It Usually Is

A Viking sealed burner that sparks but never catches is almost always a cap seating, electrode or gas pressure problem — not the ignition module it usually gets quoted as. How to tell which, before you pay for the wrong part.

A Viking sealed burner that clicks steadily but never lights is the single most common cooktop call we take in Woodinville, and it is also the one most often quoted wrongly. The clicking itself is reassuring news that gets misread as bad news: it means the ignition module is generating spark. Something else is stopping that spark from turning into a flame.

There are only four realistic causes, and they are cheap, cheap, cheap and moderate — in that order of likelihood.

The burner cap is not sitting where it should

This is the first thing to check and it accounts for more of these calls than everything else combined. A Viking sealed burner is a stack: the base with the gas ports, the burner head, and the cap on top. The cap has to sit flat and fully seated, with its underside locating properly onto the head. Lift it a millimetre out of position — by washing it, by knocking a pan into it, by putting the wrong cap back after cleaning a four-burner top — and the gas leaving the ports no longer passes through the spark gap.

You get a burner that clicks perfectly and never catches.

Take the cap off cold. Look at the underside: it should be clean metal, not carbon-crusted. Look at the head underneath: the ports around the rim should be open holes, not filled with a baked-on ring of spill residue. A straightened paperclip or a stiff-bristled brush will open a blocked port. What must never go near one is a drill bit, or any other tool that could leave the hole larger than it started. Then set the cap back down squarely — on most Viking burners you can feel it drop the last half-millimetre into place.

If the burner has four caps that look alike but are not identical, check you have not swapped a simmer cap onto a power burner. It happens constantly after a deep clean.

The spark electrode is dirty, wet or cracked

The electrode is the little white ceramic post sitting at the edge of the burner, with a metal tip. It needs three things: a clean tip, a dry ceramic, and an uncracked body.

Wet is the most common and the most self-correcting. A boil-over, or a thorough wipe-down with a wet cloth, leaves moisture in the electrode well. The spark then tracks to earth through the water instead of jumping the gap to the burner. Symptom: continuous clicking, no light, often on more than one burner at once, always right after cooking or cleaning. Cure: leave the range off, take the caps off, and give it four to six hours to dry. If you are impatient, a hairdryer on cool for ten minutes usually does it.

Dirty is a carbon or grease film on the tip, which weakens the spark. Wipe it with a dry cloth or an alcohol wipe once the range is cold.

Cracked is the one that needs a part. A hairline crack in the ceramic lets the spark leak to the chassis rather than to the burner. You can often see it as a spark visibly jumping to the wrong place, or hear the click change pitch. An electrode is an inexpensive component; the labour is getting to it.

Manifold gas pressure is low

This is the cause that gets missed, and it is the one behind most of the “replaced the module and it did not help” stories we are called in after.

A Viking cooktop expects a specific manifold pressure — commonly around 5 inches of water column on natural gas, higher on LP. Below that, the burner produces a gas/air mixture too lean to catch reliably at the spark gap. The tell is that the problem is worst on the largest burner, worst when several burners are already running, and worst when other gas appliances in the house are drawing at the same time.

Where it comes from, in our experience locally: a partially closed shutoff valve behind the range after an appliance swap, a flex connector kinked when the range was pushed back into place, a regulator that was never converted correctly after an LP-to-natural-gas change, or genuinely marginal supply pressure on an older service.

None of this is diagnosable by eye. It takes a manometer on the manifold tap and a reading taken with the range under load. It is also not homeowner work — but it is worth knowing it exists, because a shop that has not measured it is not in a position to tell you the module is bad.

When it really is the ignition module

The module is the last suspect, not the first. What actually points at it:

  • No clicking at all, from any burner, with the range powered.
  • Clicking that never stops, continuing after the burner has lit and after every knob is off. That is a stuck switch or a failed module and it should be shut down at the breaker until it is dealt with, because a continuously sparking module is a fire concern.
  • One burner that never sparks while the others do, with a known-good electrode and wiring — meaning the fault is at that channel of the module.

Notice that “clicks but will not light” is not on that list. That is the whole point of this article.

If you have re-seated the cap, cleared the ports, dried and cleaned the electrode, and the burner still clicks without catching, the next honest step is a pressure reading. That is where a visit earns its money — not by carrying a module, but by carrying a manometer.

Follow-ups

Why do all the burners click when only one will not light?

Most Viking cooktops fire every electrode from a single module whenever any valve is opened. Hearing all four click is normal and tells you the module is working — the fault is at the one burner that is not catching.

Is it safe to keep using the other burners?

If the failed burner lights with a match and burns a clean blue flame, the other burners are fine to use. If you smell gas at any point, or the flame at any burner is yellow and lifting off the ports, shut the range off at the valve and get it looked at before using it again.

How much of this can I do myself?

Cleaning and re-seating burner caps and clearing the ports is homeowner work and fixes a fair share of these. Anything involving the manifold, the regulator or the ignition wiring is not — that is gas work and it needs a meter and a manometer.
